The weekend started early for us. Ant & my “date night” took place on Thursday. We did a bit of shopping then stopped at the bookstore for some light mag reading & a choco-nanner shake that was really quite good. Once 10 o’clock rolled in, we were off to start our stand in line for Batman. Oh, so exciting! I love going to midnight showings…there’s so much energy there. I love being around people who are just as excited (if not more) for something as I am. When my friend Somer & I went to the midnight showing of the last Lord of the Rings, the best part was seeing all the fanaticals dressed in elfin garb. Or hobbit garb. You could tell they were totally the ‘theater geeks’ in high school. I think I secretly wanted to be one of them…to seemingly lack those inhibitions. While there weren’t as many Batman characters running around this time, we did have a short visit from a small crew once we found our seats. That poor Robin.
We got into the theater pretty early & had our good friends to chat through the hours with. And then it started. And it was amazing. I had predicted I would be sad seeing Heath Ledger up on the screen, that I wouldn’t enjoy the movie as much, just knowing that he won’t be up there anymore. But his Joker was so fascinating that I couldn’t even think of him as a person, as a human.
I would feel silly trying to write a review as so many have been done giving him & the whole film kudos. And I know most of America has already experienced it. But as a once (still) obnoxiously committed, fully entrenched fan of Heath Ledger’s, I would feel like a louse keeping my 2ยข to myself. A friend predicted in our high school senior yearbook that I would still be obsessed with Heath Ledger in ten years. I think she was right. I’ve only got four more years to prove that claim true, but he has made enough good films & left a deep enough impression to make me feel positive that I will surpass that prediction.
So go see the picture if you haven’t. It was amazing. And if you’ve already seen it, go see it again. We’re making another trip this weekend.
